Salt: All Action No Strong Plot

Synopsis: Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is an employee of the CIA and living a fine life with her arachnologist husband Michael Krause (August Diehl). A defecting Russian spy Orlov (Daniel Olbrychski) reveals the plot to kill visiting Russian President Matveyev (Olek Krupa) in US in a bid to disintegrate the United States of America. He also reveals to the CIA that Evelyn Salt is actually a sleeper Russian agent which turns Evelyn Salt’s life upside down.
The CIA soon swings into action and starts investigating into the accusation. Salt is unable to reach her husband. She wants to convince the CIA of who she really is and hope that they believe her, or take matters into her own hands. She takes the burden of proving her innocence into her own hands and the CIA starts hunting for her, led doggedly by Peabody (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Her only friend appears to be co-worker Ted Winter (Liev Schreiber), who maintains her innocence.
Review: The Cold War days are back as Phillip Noyce takes us back to the days of the espionage. Four years after his last movie Catch a Fire Noyce tries to bank in with Angelina Jolie as a spy. Hats off to Jolie for pull off this role which was written keeping Tom Cruise in mind which he declined to do the movie choosing Knight and Day over it. Only Jolie could have pulled off the character of a Cold War era spy.
The film lacks due to a weak plot which hardly generates any suspense. Noyce who had worked with Angelina Jolie in The Bone Collector tries to create a super charged atmosphere. The movie reaches states of hyperbola and comes crashing down at more than one instance. The relationship between Evelyn and her arachnologist husband is shown in flashbacks which doesn’t seem to be convincing.
When all these don’t work the director tries to make it into a seductive thriller and with Jolie around he doesn’t find it too difficult. The movie seems too much of a fantasy at time especially with Jolie doing all the running around. She takes down men twice her size, scales buildings with bare hands and feet, leaps from the roofs of speeding vehicles Salt looks a lot like a more serious version of the Charlie’s Angels films, which have no pretense in reality.
If you are an Angelina Jolie fan Salt is not worth missing. She has pulled off another of her brilliant performances in the movie. The action sequences and the cinematography are worth praise in the movie. Phillip Noyce has done a good job with the direction but suffers from the fact that there isn’t much in the story. At 100 minutes the movies is worth a watch but nothing worth an Oscar for.
